Brian's books have been downloaded over thirty thousand times and he receives emails from all over the world on a regular basis, complimenting them. In December Brian will publish the first in a new volume of books on film music, titled, 'Hearing Is Believing - Film Music and What it Does to Us'

He has twice won teaching awards at the college, the most recent of which was 'most inspirational teacher'.
Brian wrote the Film Music degree, which has been running now for four years, and has just short of a hundred students, spread over three years. Brian recently completed his PhD, which is based on the issue of how film music conveys meaning. |
As an arranger Brian has participated at the highest level within the music industry. After studying on the Jazz & Light Music course in the early 1980s, one of Brian’s first roles was as staff arranger and musician on the Cruise Liner QE2. Following this he worked widely in Europe scoring for a multitude of shows, venues and artists including the Blackpool Tower, Yarmouth Hippodrome, Windmill Theatre, Eindhoven Stadschoburg Theatre, Circus Krone. From 1987 to 1992 Brian worked as MD and staff arranger at the top London cabaret venue The Talk of London, during which

he provided arrangements for many international cabaret singers.
In addition Brian has provided arrangements for numerous artists, including Julie Rogers, Kate Bush, Eurythmics, Elton John, Natalie Cole, Dickie Henderson, Sting and many others. He was involved in the musicals Chess, Aspects of Love and in the London and New York runs of Phantom of the Opera. Brian provided arrangements for the BBC’s Noel Edmunds Late Late Breakfast Show and Anything Goes. |
As a composer Brian has composed music for TV since 1995. His music has featured in television, radio, film and theatre. He was a major contributor to many of the cable and satellite channels which appeared in the late 1990s and has composed documentary music for Sky, BBC, Channel 4 and other broadcasters.
In addition Brian’s music has featured in several theatre productions, including Horizon Theatre Company’s production of ‘Everyone should own a Gun’, performed at the Edinburgh Festival. Brian provided music for two films – The Appointment and Its All Happening, directed by Hollywood Film Awards-nominated director Stefan Gordon. |
As a player Brian has worked extensively within the industry. He worked for two seasons as trombonist, piano player and staff arranger on board the QE2.
Moving solely to keyboards Brian worked heavily in Europe on a number of shows and productions. He worked as musical director and keyboard player at the Talk of London. Further notable playing credits include Tom Jones, Barbra Streisand, Kate Bush, Elton John and others. |
As an educator Brian has worked as a music lecturer in London and Yorkshire. He currently works as Principal Lecturer and Programme Leader in Film Music at Leeds College of Music, one of Europe’s top music conservatoires. His specialist areas are film music, composition, orchestration, music theory, music history, context and culture. Amongst other qualifications he holds a Masters Degree (with Distinction), a Certificate of Education, and recently completed his PhD in music.

Brian has perfect pitch. He is a self taught piano player and has played from the age of four. Brian learned trombone and taught himself how to read music as a teenager before entering Leeds College of Music to study arranging. He played trombone in the Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra, with whom he performed at the Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Nice Jazz Festival and Montreaux Jazz Festival.

Brian lives on a remote Pacific island, surrounded by sharks, where he works as the Butler to his cat, the much-more-famous and infinitely more good looking Lord Fluffington, and his sister Lady Belle.
Brian also lives with his life partner, composer and songwriter Holland Morrell. |
